Happy Birthday Thelma Schoonmaker!
Thelma Schoonmaker was born on the 3rd of January 1940,
She is a multi-award-winning film editor who is best known for her collaboration with director Martin Scorsese that has lasted over 40 years.
Schoonmaker has edited all of Scorsese’s films since 1980 when she edited “Raging Bull”.
In the early 1980s Scorsese introduced her to the legendary English film director
Michael Powell they fell in love and married in May 1984 and stayed together until Powell’s death in 1990.
In addition to her twenty-three awards including three Oscars and two BAFTA’s, she has also been awarded twelve honorary awards including fellowships from BAFTA and the British Film Institute.
She is undoubtedly a master of her craft even being called by some “The greatest living film editor” and she is still working having edited Scorsese’s latest film “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023).
She is also very active in her role as chief custodian of her late husband's legacy by supervising the digital restorations of Michael Powell’s work, introducing screenings and transcribing his diaries.
Thelma is 84 years young today! I hope she keeps on going for years to come.
