“Poor Things” (2023)
Directed By Yorgos Lanthimos,
Subversive, Transgressive, Phantasmagorical, postmodernist, bohemian, eccentric, thoughtful and wonderful.
Anyone fussing about the morality of the premise, needs to stop and actually watch the film.
Anyone who has spent a moment being upset or disappointed that this film is not set in Glasgow, needs to stop and actually watch the film.
The film is a feminist reworking of The Modern Prometheus tale.
Yorgos Lanthimos and his whole team have crafted a truly stunning motion picture. The production is vibrant and every square inch of every set and location is lush and evokes the feel and ambience of the film's very non-specific time period or whatever reality this story takes place in. The costume, hair and makeup all seamlessly feed into this dreamlike world these lavish and dynamic characters occupy.
I could go on...
Every single cast member, be it a lead or day player is just wonderful.
I'm going to be puzzling over lens choices made in this film I saw some shots I've never seen before.
It's wonderful and in my opinion... Right now! Still high off the experience near perfect... except it could have been 20 min shorter... Nothing we got was bad but could have been tightened up, but that seems to be all of modern cinema.
Not a film for the squeamish or the prudish. it's not for people who hate experimental fun camera work! it needs to be avoided by the type of people who complain about detailed production design and beautiful costumes... You know like in a Wes Anderson films.
If you know someone who has said "I think The Beatles are overrated" this film... Not for them.
But I give it 4.5 stars if it was a bit tighter it would have a perfect score from me!
I saw this film at a preview screening at a Cineworld cinema because I have an
"Unlimited Card"
I highly recommend going to the cinema to see this movie at any cinema.
"Poor Things" opens on Friday the 12th of January in the UK.
